The First Visit

Children's first visits to the dentist can have an enormous impact on how they view visiting the dentist throughout the rest of their lives. At Hall Dental in Lethbridge, our team loves working with children, and we always do our level best to make sure their initial visits with us are positive experiences.

This can go a long way in ensuring that children don't have negative associations with the dentist, and don't avoid undergoing treatment out of fear and anxiety as adults.

Talking to Children About Visiting the Dentist

When it comes to talking to kids about visiting the dentist, less is more!

Too much information can overwhelm children, so just keep it simple and straightforward.

Here's what we recommend you tell your child before visiting the dentist:

  • They'll count your teeth
  • They'll brush your teeth
  • The dentist is going to take a look
  • We only visit a few times a year

How often does my child need to visit the dentist?

Your child should attend a dental checkup and professional cleaning twice a year, every year, just like you!

These regular visits are essential to your child's long-term oral health.

These bi-annual checkups and cleanings allow us to thoroughly clean your child's teeth in a way that just isn't possible at home.

In addition, they allow us to catch developing dental problems before they become serious.

When should my child first visit the dentist?

Ideally, children should have an initial visit with the dentist around the time when the first tooth erupts. This usually happens when children are around a year old, though it varies.

This first appointment allows us to establish a baseline for your child's oral health, and it also gives you the opportunity to ask us questions about caring for your child's teeth as they erupt. After this first appointment, we likely won't have to see your child again until the rest of the teeth have erupted.
